Spillemyndigheden introduces ‘Player ID’ for in-store gambling from 1 October

The Danish gaming regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has announced that from 1 October it will be compulsory for players to provide a ‘Player ID’ when placing bets at a physical retailer.

The Player ID will be linked to a gambling account with the gambling operator. The Player ID will allow you to cash out winnings as well as set deposit limits. The Player ID will also ensure that players do not lose their winnings from a betting shop, for example, if they lose their betting slip.

So far, slots there are no requirements with regards to how individual operators choose to design their ID cards, meaning they have the choice of whether they want to provide a physical card or a virtual card.

The Player ID means that anyone who has excluded themselves from gambling with the Danish Gambling Authority's register of self-excluded persons (ROFUS) after 1 October will also be blocked from gambling in physical stores.

Justifying their reasoning, Spillemyndigheden commented in a statement: “The background for requirements for registration of players and mandatory use of Player IDs is a political desire to increase consumer protection and reduce the risk of young people under the age of 18 gaining access to gambling in physical stores. In addition, there is a desire to strengthen efforts to combat match-fixing and money laundering.”

The implementation of a mandatory Player ID in the physical betting market was politically agreed upon in November 2019.
